I had a conversation with an IT chap, highly technical shit he works with - hard core coding for Volvo IT.
I'm strictly an amateur web builder / designer, and have only done one course in Graphic Design here in Sweden - apart from that I'm self taught.
Basically, this IT bod pissed right all over my chips, scoffing at all web builders / designers, saying that website building was "in its infancy" and that in "4-5 years" there will be practically no jobs for those working in web design.
What the fuck?? I was just planning on learning Flash and jumping in full time...! I've enough freelance clients to get decent part time cash, and - I think - almost the skills to get a job 9-5.
Any thoughts on this scenario?

he's being a blow-hard cunt - proper geeks love to rank themselves against other geeks. This guy will not be touching Flash if that's what your into.
- RustyBadge0
Blow hard proper geek about sums him up.
He's no designer, not at all. Builds the back ends of fucking mad databases for Volvo. Not even sure which languages etc he uses... C++ and more, I suppose.
Flash is not my gig, not yet. I tend to work in CSS (handcoding) and make fairly plain, I suppose Scandinavian-influenced, work.
Seems to be a LOT of Flash users out there though...
...I suppose it will remain that if you're good enough, you'll always be paid for it.
- UndoUndo0
yeah he's right look how empty the jobs section is. no-one lookin for flash designers etc
*pulls out 'learn c++ in a day' book
^sarcasm. sorry
- nRIK0
what aspect of flash are youplanning to get into (curious)? interaction design/animation/web app dev/...?
- kelpie0
at the end of the day, (if your a designer) your employment shouldn't be dependent on technology anyway - it's what your doing that matters not what your doing it with.*
ignore him, he's a spanner.
*closes "Big Illustrated Pop-up Book of Designer Truisms" ;)
- RustyBadge0
I'm fancying dipping my wick with Flash as a design tool. Building interactive elements for sites predominantly.
What do you, as an expert, recommend?
- nRIK0
lol kelpie, yea thats what i was gonna say
if youre more on the coding side, you learn aspects of the principles and processes of developing software/etc, and it doesnt matter, since you will likely be able to adapt to whatever language/technology easily enough
same applies to being a designer as youve said
- kelpie0
I hope you're not refering to me as an expert?! ;) I'm just a designer, but blustering geeks like this one really get my goat. A lot of skilled hard-working educated people here at my work he's basicly calling donkeys :(
My brother is also a serious heavyweight software/backend guy and has a greater degree of respect btw
:)

Undo - were you being sarcy r.e. jobs in Flash design? I ask, because I am not UK based, and there is usually a good few jobs for Flash Gordons over here in Sweden...
- englishlanguage0
"in 4-5 years"...
It could happen in 4-5 years
- englishlanguage0
I make typefaces and couldn't have cared less, haha
- RustyBadge0
We won't use typefaces in the future, everyone knows that!
- nRIK0
yea, but what you learn from using Flash as a design tool will likely be trasferable to future technologies... the web is only a medium
that IT dude doesnt think the way a designer does, and obviously focuses on the technology (which is a given since thats the T in IT lol)
- englishlanguage0
What will you use then
- UndoUndo0
*holds hands up.
sorry was being sarcastic
:(
- RustyBadge0
Englishlanguage - I was just joking.
A name change for you perhaps?
- kelpie0
the point is, surely, if your using flash then your designing promo stuff most probably. whizz-bang kind of stuff that's irelevent to technology to a greater degree (you know what I mean).
A guy in my work was telling me about a thing called "Rails" or something he saw recently which makes it take about an hour to build an entire massive DB website and pap it out with supplied graphics. Sounds amazing, but that's the kind of thing this guy's talking about (isn't it?)
- kelpie0
What will you use then
englishlanguage
(Oct 3 05, 05:40)sequences of flashing coloured lights and tones.
more universal.
- RustyBadge0
Aye he's messing about with big ass worldwide databases. No ideas what he does for a joab really. Not sure he has much of a clue about what I do either.
And the world keeps turning.
- nRIK0
yea, but not sure if that will have the higher level of interactivity that flash can provide... its more to replace things like php/jsp/etc
