i'm at work.. its a legit copy... at home i'm running the trial and i've never seen this grey box before.. its not a bounding box.. just like this two stroke halo thing

I have it too and can't figure out why it shows up when it does and what it wants me to do with it. It's annoying.

It appears when you use the selection tool and double-click on a grouped path, so in essence it turns into the direct selection tool. Cool down that hot clicking finger and you'll never see it again.

yeah.. it lets you move stuff within a group independently while still maintining the group while that is showing up

Funny, I got the same thing once and was like wtf. So I clicked like mad all over the place and it went away as quickly as it came. Shook me up tho.

If you're talking about the gray one that appears when you double click an item, it allows you to access items within a mask or group and manipulate them individually

its definitely nice if you haev a lot of groups on top of eachother... it lets you move one thing without having to reselect and group stuff

hit "V" then command and/ or option and i got all the selction tools i need.

Personally, I prefer to work with the direct selection tool most of the time, and when you click or drag over an object with Option (or Alt) key pressed it will select the entire object, not just certain anchor points or paths. Neat trick.

i'm generally not doing any illustrations that are too complex, but i find myself not selecting the whole shape way too often to make working go smoothly...
it seems like it has its plusses in the final stages of a project... especially in minor tweakage

I GOT IT>... It's called "Isolate Selected Group" where if you have a large amount of items or paths selectged you can opt to have them temporarily grouped in an "isolated group" which is the grey box.
Can't figure out how to disable the feature though.
