How a big company does it? You mean like Verizon or some other company that spent gazillions and ended up with a crappy logo? You might as well stick the designs on the wall and have the bosses kid throw darts at them...
Focus groups suck.

less is more.. get as few people and opinions involved as possibe.
a group compromise is a failure.

yeah I would try to stick to a small varied group, famale, male, designer, older, younger. But I agree to many boards/review committees just messe things up.
And make them write so no one else just agrees to agree, what the likes and dislikes of the logo are, and go from there.

the boys are right..
design by group consensus, or design by committee is rarely a winning game..
generally speaking the results are watered down crap.choose a good designer..let them thrash out some quality concepts and have qualified folks render their opinions...
and if you're really lucky, you won't end up with quarkxpress's new logo

consult the shipping dudes. they'll let you know.

For real. My ad agency tried to rebrand by commitee and all my super awesome designs were rejected. Why? Because we let everyone vote. If we had a shipping dept. then they would have made the right decision.
Instead now I and the other designer here are embarassed to even pass out our business cards.

Let the CEO's 13 year old daughter have a look at it and see what she thinks. From my experience this is how these things get sorted...
