START OF RANT!
A recent trend has emerged on NT that worries me slightly, lots of talk about rates, salaries, nackstabbing, money and such, and all with a twinge of greed and bitterness.
Why are said people designers? On my part its because it makes me happy and I know I need to work for another 40 years so I may aswell do something I love.
The fact is I could (and probably most of the designers I know could), get a job with an agency that pay me a lot more money than I can earn alone, steady wage and all that, but I wouldnt be as happy as I am now in my work.
Either you want to be happy, or you want lots of money, if you can have both great, good luck to you, but in my experience it is very rare this happens.
Lets stop complaining about shite mentioned above and get talking about design again, if your not happy in your job, leave it, it really is that simple. And please dont begin to mention principles, big companies havent got any, so if that doesnt suit you, then dont work for a big company. Get back you what your good at and make yourself happy, bitching to people on here who you hardly know isnt going to make you happy, but doing what you love and do best will.
END OF RANT!

I zoned out about half way through your rant. However, i agree with your sentiment. (or at least the first bit.)

thanks ebc, its not me being negative, or slagging anyone, just trying to get people to remember why were all here in the first place!

//Rant noted
Remember your words the next time you make your car or mortgage payment and you realize you're only making enough to keep your head just slightly above water. That's no way to live.

I don't think it's a 'recent trend' and it's a fundamental issue if people are to make a living from it.

"talk about rates, salaries, nackstabbing, money and such, and all with a twinge of greed and bitterness."
Welcome to Earth. Most of these having been happening forever. These things are sad, but it sounds like you are pretty young [I know I need to work for another 40 years], so I guess someday you will understand that it isn't as easy to correct as calling for a group hug.
- DavidFelt0
I dont worry about work, at all.... That is the way to live, if i go under, fair enough, at least I will have had the balls to try and do things for the right reason, the reason i studied for years in the first place.
Money isnt everything you know, if you want a steady wage in an industry that will always be here and a good pension, go be a copper or a soldier.
If on the other hand you want to do something you enjoy and maybe have to put up with a bit of financial hardship every now and again when things arent going too well, then stcik around!
But dont fucking complain about having a job that most people would love to have
- skelly0
The economy, maybe? When you're making enough money each week it's easy to not dwell on the $$ aspect of your job, but when you're not doing so well it suddenly becomes a lot more important.
When you start deciding not to buy certain items at the grocery store because your gas tank is almost empty you start reconsidering how much you charge clients...
- DavidFelt0
All valid points... very valid indeed, and everybody knows this... so why hang about here and complain about it, thats the way this industry has always been and always will be, it didnt stop you wanting to do it though did it, so why complain now?

What's 'nackstabbing'? I've been a designer for a while and have never come across it.
- DrHuxtable0
There is a lot of hobo-stabbing on NT, but neckstabbing. Not so sure.

I feel you David.. but don't you think it's part of the proces? Afterall.. some people, like me, like to hear experiences of others.. how it goes in this 'tough' industry.
I think it's interesting and learnful.
- DavidFelt0
Lol, thanks for pointing that out, im not such a good speller when i have been to the pub for a few on friday afternoon!
- DavidFelt0
It is learnful, it makes me learn that Im in this for the love, not the money
- SPYK0
oh how i'd love to be down the pub right now
give it 3/4 hour or so....

I know what you mean, but sometimes it's hard not to be a teensy wee bit bitter, when we work toward the goal of a company making piles more money than before they hired us, yet we get fuck all off them and as a result our salaries are considerably less than we deserve/need (in our opinions).
having sold my soul to advertising (basicly) this lapsed socialist would at least like to be shown some of the money once in a while.

"Either you want to be happy, or you want lots of money, if you can have both great, good luck to you, but in my experience it is very rare this happens."
I was happy until my work hasnt given me a raise in 2 years and they keep raking it in. Im not drivin by money and I do like where I work - I just think that its time for people to start getting what they deserve. My office tries to sell us on the fact that its such a great place to work and they buy us cookies. Im working overtime all week and this weekend to get our biggest project ever online - I dont they after its done they will be throwing money at me and frankly I feel I deserve more.
I think the money bar has been lowered by an oversaturated market and if someone is work their weight then they should be demanding a descent wage.
Im also done with $500 websites for friends - its way too much of my valuable time and energy helping friends out. Id rather drink with them then build them websites.
I do agree with the end of your post and I am considering leaving if I dont get more money.
- DavidFelt0
I hear you kelpie, but these are the choices we make.... I chose to go self employed cause me and my partner were basically running the last agency we were at, yeah weve been skint for a long time and its been hard work, but do I love every minute? You fucking bet I do!
You gotta go your own way and be happy, lets get back to ps battles, constructive crit, exchanging tunes, begging for fonts and linking up cool sites.
Lets not moan, 'specially on a friday afternoon!
