NYC Design Firms - Too Corporate?

Do all the Web firms up here feel quiet and corporate? Does anyone hang out with their co-workers outside of work -- enjoy their company, or even go out to lunch?

When I first moved up here my goal was to get a job with one of the "top" Flash/Interactive firms in NYC. After experiencing the culture at one and hearing about a few others, working for these firms (the ones with the big clients) seems unappealing. It sounds like few creative decisions are left to the designers (leave that to the ad agencies), there's a whole lot of pigeonholing (I suppose this is a factor in good business), and there's not a lot money salary-wise (why should they pay salary when they can hire freelancers -- not to mention talent is so easily replaceable in NYC?).

I hope I'm not coming off as disgruntled (I'm not at all), but I'm just curious if the job culture up here is vastly different than what everyone expected prior to living up here. I've got a few more months of grad school before I go job hunting (or stick to freelancing) and am curious what people think.
