sup,
i'm interested in hearing YOUR opinions on what areas of design have the most flaws or lack of care in this day and age. not really your gripe with websites, but design in general perhaps w/ today's magazines, signs, billboards, commercials etc whether its related to typography, layout, shapes, phases, fusion, directions or whatever category. like u can say how u hate how the ipod has spawned design trends in technology in general (look at the recent gaming systems, xbox 360, or esp the nintendo controller)What pisses you off?
I can't comment, as im kind of learning right now(never went to design school, so i'm reading up on stuff now), i'm interested in things i should look at with a critical eye. The past week i have been reading quite a few design blogs and while facinating, i just want to see some concise comments, i'l read essays when i get home ;-)

sorry for the long post

I really doubt web design can be topped in the number of amatuer and misguided "professionals" flooding the field with absolutey bullshit design.

all deisng has its flaws

right, but some are more glaring than others...and while some can just be as interpretted as breaking the rules, i'm interested in things that +detract+ from their objective.
for instance in critiquing the design of the new ipod nano, one person could say the placement of the headphone jack on the bottom is ineffective. but then i could argue that its quite instinctive, as your ipod would be upside down in your pants, and therefore, you don't have to "think upside down" when accessing the controls

is this for your new OV job?

There are no real objective standards, as even the strictest and most basic rule is often broken for better design.

The ipod nano is "impossibly small" and that really makes no sense. So, the error lies in the tagline.

my what job? i dont know what that means. im not in a design field, its just a hobby for me and im interested in a discussion

belief systems.

mg33, it is impossibly small ;-) ...when you consider how long ago the ipod came out and how much time a competitor had to create something like this before...i mean yes its just a flash player and there are reese pieces butter cups looking mp3 players and i hate ipods, but i admit its "impossibly small" 8P

Nairn, interesting.
if i can relate this to music for a second, equating "Belief" with "theory", i've always been like "nah man, music theory is constraining, i ain't gonna bother learning it". but recently i've been learning about music theory, scales and chords and harmony and its like jesus christ, the things i've been missing, now if i need a sad chord i know how to do that. i guess all these rules have something to do with human perception, but yeah once you hold them as gospel/belief, you can be holding yourself back from evolving.

think this way.
building collapse in cases where design fails
pens dont click anymore cause its badly designed.
the tab handle falls off cause of bad design.
maybe its more about effectiveness of design versus structural design. a beautiful design may just look pretty but not communicate where as a bad design can communicate.

nicely put

we evolve, i hope.
