Yeah it is old but they have just released a second edition so I was toying with the idea of purchasing it. (this time without Mr Ginger though)

Great for enviromental typography. A good read for the various considerations of general design...

is the new edition very different from the first one? i have the 1st edition and agree that it feels dated

I have skimmed through it, didnt really find what I was looking for in it though.

Were the Amazon reviews not enough?
'Find Out How Type Works'? Not by reading this. It's Ok if you know nothing about typography, as it quickly skims over some obvious points that you should know about this broad subject area. However, it's very overated, and with a basic understanding of type you'll feel you've been let down by this book...

would "thinking with type: a critical guide" be a better choice?

I don't know anything about a new edition, but the first one was a fun read, and really easy to get through.

If the 2nd edition as a lot of new information I might get it.
I read the 1st edition when I was just getting into design and found it to be really helpful. But I quickly out grew the book.
