Media Temple Outage

Whats the deal with media temple? Why does everyone rave over them?
I read the article on their site about the power outage. I cant believe they only have one backup generator for a data centre.
In manchester (UK) we had an underground fire wich distroyed a load of phone lines & Power. The data centre we use has a generator and a backup also has 3 seperate internet connectio from three seperate providers so when BT was out we still had full speed from the other two.
All this and we can still offer cost effective hosting.
Will somone explain why media temple is better?

I'm the last one to brag about media temple (disclaimer: i work for a different hosting company), but they didn't have a single generator, and this type of failure has nothing to do with them - it's their datacenter, and it happens to be a very respected datacenter.
Mediatemple is at Alchemy.
Alchemy is in the Garland Building in downtown LA.
The Garland building datacenter was designed for banks and telcos - it really is a very good datacenter. There are 5 generators, though due to the volume of electrical equiptment, it's likely that 4 or 5 MUST be running for power to stay on. If a single generator fails, then load increases, you get brownouts, and equipment damaged.
If you take their notifications at face value (that is, if you believe everything on the page as gospel), then they had generators, but not enough, or they weren't tested properly, or a part just failed, which you really can't prevent except by buying more generators and building some redundancy into the redundant power system..
Getting generation right is tricky - testing is a difficult task (try telling a bank you're going to test your generators, and you MAY knock them offline, but you HOPE that you won't - see what they say), and you never really know when you're going to get tested.
At least the outage, as described, is better than my original guess (based on a history of dealing with datacenters and generators) - I would have actually assumed they ran out of diesel, because they had been on for some time after the initial DWP outage.

i just flipped over and things are great.
if you can't understand why we love it, you should look into "lovemarks." MT is a wonderful brand amongst the community.

Brand whores!

I [heart] MT. Why? Compared to all of the other hosting facilites I've used, I have had the least amount of problems and the best support (including turn around).
I can sleep at night knowing I don't have to worry about server configs "automagically" being changed/fucked up and then spending the next three days trying to explain what's happening to some support guy that keeps asking me what fucking browser I'm using.
If someone's got somethin' better, I'm all ears. But, if it ain't broke... don't fix it. Right?

MT FO LIFE SUN big up
- ludawg0
Is it just me, or didn't MT have some shit on their old infrastructure page about how they could stay up for like 28 days or something running on backup generators? I checked again, and now that bit of text is no longer on the page.
It's one of the reasons I signed on. WTF!!!??

I've used MT for 4 years and have only had to call customer support once. And when I did the guy on the other end of the phone sounded like Christian Slater. What's cooler than having hollywood hasbeens do your tech support?

let me be honest, since hanging out here, their servers must have been down at least 10 times in the past. I use Hostway at http://www.hostway.com and in 6 years our sites have never been done, except when our CC's have expired, which was the other day.
