JS Slideshow Help

Been working on a simple slideshow (at client's request) for the splash page of a very simple website. It fades between a set of six images.

It's supposed to set the current image as the background image of a DIV, then fade in the next image and so on through the gallery.
This works when previewing locally from MX into Safari but not when uploaded to the webspace. Any ideas what the problem might be?
I'm no Javascript whizz, and I know it doesn't work with IE and will need some more work to make it cross-browser compatible. Any help appreciated.

Is flash not a better solution?
JS seems a bit like hard work for what your doing.
Nice site for hillside though. Never heard of them before.

Hmm, probably would be but the client specifically asked for no Flash. Might just do it anyway!
Hillside have been trading under the name for a couple of years but have been around for way longer. I started there at the end of 2003. We just wanted a simple site to show off some of the work, nothing too fancy.
