I was hoping this thread was going to be about sleeping with "friends" at work... but alas no such luck. anyhoo...
i have traditionally found that once you are hired in at a certain rate at a company. that rate somewhat defines you at that company... all your raises whether they be annual 2%'ers or actual merit increases are always based of that initial hiring salary. for all intensive purposes they own you at that rate... it is often very difficult to break management's mindset that you are worth more once you've accepted that salary and have worked there for sometime. While difficult it's not impossible.
I was in the same position as you once... I found out what my coworker was making for doing the same job... Naturally it was more and I was pissed but he offered me these very sobering words... "this place will never find value in you unless somewhere else does" So I went out and found a better job and sure enough the counter offer came... Whether you take the counter offer or not is entirely up to you... I didn't because I knew they had kept me at a lower pay scale for 6 years... In summary... work sucks. especially when you don't feel valued.
