Need your advice NT, which one of the above is a better site structure to ensure high search engine rankings.
By folders, I mean having one domain with each site section following, e.g.
www.mysite.com/demo, as opposed to a subdomain structure such as demo.mysite.com

No idea about rankings but subdomains bug me for some reason. Much prefer a folder.

multimedia_design\
product_design\
graphic_design\
etcand break up the words with underscores or hypens

I'd only use subdomains if the content is estranged from the rest of the site, like myblog.professionalsite.com.
No idea about search results.
