white frames

  I have a quicktime someone wants me to convert to an avi god kows why, but when I export it from quicktime I get a load of white frames at the beginning? why is this and can someone tell me how to fix it.

  The movie has a second or two of black then it fades up into the movie. It apears that the avi file has replaced the second and the start with white WTF.
  Any help is much appreciated.
