kj your review of the BJM show sounded very close to what I experienced in Vancouver, minus the sound and lighting problems.
I hope I get the chance to see them again before Anton is locked up permenantly.

- mattyd0

gee, are you reading crime and punishment to the little one in your belly as we planned? remember, 8-9 mozart, 9-10 ice cube's amerikkka's most wanted, and 10-midnight, dostoevsky.
we must be diligent.

hey danthon, it was kind of crazy. here's a little blurb i wrote about it the day after:
After watching the most mediocre second band, Anton played DJ for close to forty-five minutes (this bizarre acid fueled conversation over the beat of a person being dragged through a river, with Anton in full Nurse Ratched mode, saying, "Thank you for being so patient. We will be on shortly"--over and over from the balcony, the whole time with this crazy smile. Finally he came down to the stage with his shirt off and just started babbling, first about his blackberry (which was brilliant), then about New Orleans--which made utterly no sense. The audience was frustrated and rowdy, and the next thing you know Anton's challenging guys to come up on stage, threatening to have them eliminated (and I don't mean bounced from the club). When they started the first song it sounded like shit, so Anton spent five minutes berating the sound guy ("John, I'm trying to give you this gig so you can feed your family, but if you fuck up again you're done"). Then Anton fired the opening band (offering them $100 for their efforts), threatened to leave if the guy working the lights didn't stop flashing in his face ("Hey I've already been paid. Fuck all of you. I'll pack my shit right now") before he began playing again. Between every song he wanted to fight someone, doing the same old, "Don't throw things and hide behind people" bit that he did in Dig. And yet, by the end of the short set, it was magical once again, and outside of the near riot that almost ensued (I'm very serious), it was another fun evening with The Brian Jonestown Massacre. The only criticism I have was that Anton's shenanigans made them only get through seven songs, when the last time I saw them in Sac they played for two hours. He blamed the club and the opening band and the audience, but he never acknowledged that his own incoherant ramblings delayed things even more. And yet, I sympathize with him too. He's made this beautiful music and just wants to perform, but the audience knows his reputation, and once drunk, they want him to be that guy--regardless of whether they bring him down or ruin his concentration. If it was me I'd probably kick some dude in the head too if he kept popping off while I was doing my thing.
