what do you use to backup your files?
i've been using DVDs, but they're hard to index, mess up my desk and are generally slow and they suck.
i'm looking to get an external hard drive and i have no idea where to start...?

i dig my LaCie 160 GB. just sits on my desk, i NEVER move it.
soon though ill probably start backing up shit on DVDR's.

I second the Lacie.
Their "extreme" series is pretty good. Got that the other day and I like it a lot. You've got 3 interfaces on it, so you can hook it up both to your pc and mac.
I also have a drive from Lacies Porsche design series as well, but that one makes a lot of noice. Pretty though.

it seems like lacie is the way to go, huh?

yes (blue light)...and make sure you use Retrospect or similar backup software, so its a fully automated, incremental daily backup of just the new/changed files... set and forget.

I use this: http://www.acomdata.com/hdp/fs.h…
it's very quiet and fast.

I have a Lacie 250gb - that I copy all my jobs on to, mind you - if it went down I'd be a dead man...

you should be using it as a backup (i.e. a second copy)... assume any single drive will die TODAY with total data loss.
Retrospect is bundled with some drives...but Desktop version isnt so expensive...or there are cheaper shareware ones out there..

If you have a mac account I think you can get it to back up your work to your iDisk although never used it myself.
