I am building a site for a charity that will have a lot of information and reports etc, however I am unsure how to format the site in terms of width; should i go with a fixed width that floats left or center etc, or should i go with the variable affair that fills the screen.
Just wondered what peoples opinions are? Fixed or resizable?
Cheers me dears!

resizable = gimp speak of course...
i meant fluid

i had this same debate while working on a charity site a while back. it was quite big as well. here's how we did it:

Charity sits always seem to be fluid - not that yours SHOULD be but generally they appear to be.

I think fixed width is best. Your text lines can become too long other wise.

i'm doing a fixed width charity site. if that helps.
i like the survival site

cheers, the company i am working for has another site produced previously, www.recovery-insulation.co.uk and the fluid thing doesn't feel too sweet there...

i think you're right about that, ian. charity sites tend to look kind of busy, anyway, so any containment that you can achieve is helpful, imho.

http://www.amnesty.org/these two are widely considered the best charity sites around. i like them both.

You can add a max-width css style to the container - doesn't work on IE 6 but should on 7. Fine in Firefox. That way you get fluiditly up to a point; say 1024*768 but after that; static.

(btw: cheers, low :D)

all good chat!
The aim of the organisation is to educate people in renewable energy and energy efficiency. One of the main areas the charity works in is producing educational kits for school children such as solar powered buggies.
The site will be used by students, teachers and local government. Schools here are known for having decrepid equipment, so I need to keep that in mind.Found a good resouce here if anyone is interested: http://coda.co.za/archive/200506…
Never built a website this big or complex before! a challenge!

best of luck, mate. charity sites can be super amazing to work on. they tend to be immense, so you have to do a lot of strategising. plus, they have to have heaps of impact, since the web is the very best way for charities to get maximum exposure on a budget. they also have to be 110% compliant and all. enjoy it for the challenge and for the warm fuzzy feeling you get when it makes their work more efficient.
