been in this situation a few times but did tell 2 clients to shove it half way through a project.
Be 'nice' about it though and make sure that they do not have anything that they can use, illustrator files, PSDs etc and make sure they are aware that they cannot use anything that you have produced until it is paid for in full. But then again that's what a contract is for.

I remember doing a logo for a company last year. I would send their marketing department bunches of concepts, and they'd fax back the ones they liked with comments, so I'd develop them further, only to have them all rejected in the end and someone else designed their logo. It looked pretty terrible, with shitty BEVELS and DROPSHADOW effects applied to it.
To those clients I say fuck 'em.
Here's their site:
http://www.generalgearco.com/Looks like they haven't even implemented their new logo anyways so I dont' care.

As a rule you can generally say that the less people spend, the more trouble they will be..
I once had a similar experience with a client who visited, went through every single effing font on my machine...'hmm...can we go back to Verdana a second'...'no, carry on...'. 'Can we see Verdana again'...
And similarly with the Hue/Saturation tool in Photoshop..'hmm...up one more..no, down again...I dont know, what do you think?'.
'I think exactly what Id sent you, you see - what I thought was encapsulated in the design that I sent you.'..
Hours and hours it went on, til finally she baulked at the 1k that was the minimum I was prepared to do the site for. What a royal pain in the ass she was..
On other occaisions, we've charged 10 grand for a project and had no come-back..
People dont value something they get for cheap, so raise your prices and you'll get less grief.
And the worst worst worst thing ever to happen to a client is a meddling spouse....OI VEH!!
