Is anyone here running their design computers entirely on Linux or other non-Apple/MS operating systems?
If so, what OS and do you recommend doing it?
I've long considered switching from MS but I don't really like Apple. What's stopped me is concern that I would also have to drop Adobe and Macromedia software (which I'm not willing to do).
Thanks

Nobody? Really?

can you even run adobe/macromedia junk on those joints?

You can run them under WINE, a Windows emulator. I don't know how stable that is though, or if it presents other problems.

I pretty sure any emulation like that would be slow and just get really frustrating.

wine isn't that slow. it's emulating a native chip, so it'd be absolutely nothing like the painful process of running virtual pc on a mac or something. WINE would really be the only way to run any macromedia products under linux, and in that respect, you're running a windows interface on the machine anyway so it's sort of a moot point in some ways. i think it'd be more of a hassle than anything to switch yet if your biz depends on it.

I've used Unix (BSD, Solaris, Linux) for over 7 years - and no, I would strongly recommend AGAINST using it for design.
Linux isn't designed for desktop use, though it's fine for developers and office work, the graphics platform really isn't mature enough for doing commercial quality graphics.
I'd personally recommend sticking with MS, but that's just my opinion.

Thanks.
Maybe if Apple's smart they'll release OS for PCs soon (since the hackers have already done it) and half the reason I don't like Apple will disappear, and I can switch.
