OK, I'm sure this has been talked over time and time again, but I'm still a lil' new 'round here, so I'm going to ask anyway...
I was asked to submit a proposal to a client for a complete redesdign of their website... huge project, big honor just to be asked, only 3 others were asked. I submitted a great proposal, and something I think was very competitive.
Last night I get an email that they are having a tough time choosing and the impact of their decision could mean millions of dollars to the company (not my company of course) and are asking everyone to provide rough sketches based on the provided wireframes.
I'm not sure what to do with this... I typically won't work like that, but if I say no then I'm sure I'm out of the running, if I say yes, I run the risk of getting robbed...
On the fence here folks... push me one way or the other please!
thx.

get them to sign a contract fro what you submit

if you are concerned with your ideas being stolen, perhaps a non-disclosure agreement would set you at ease.

but then doesn't this say that I don't trust them?

it says you are a professional.
there is no negative side to doing your paperwork. it shows you're on top of things and the project is more likely to run smoothly with you on it.

absolutely I agree with blaw, your being professional. They are asking you to do something on spec and your asking them to respect that

if it's worth "millions" to them, surely they will see the worth in spending some money on some further development from both of the proposals that are in the running. This way, everyone goes home happy and people don't slave away for free. This is, after all, a business.

"If you're selling hand grenades you aren't gonna say hey let me throw one of those to be sure it's gonna work. You either believe they all work or they don't"
"Wow you have a lot of business sense, did you take a business class? No but I sold hand grenades before"

Ice-T is so full of wisdom, thank you for that.
And thank you 'those' for that link.
After a few back and forths with client, she admitted that she too would be reluctant to do spec work, we've agreed on a fee of 10% of the overall contract and if I get the project it's applied to the bottom line, if I don't get the contract I keep the $$, and she'll sign an NDA.
nice.
