its pretty expensive mainly because of the setup involved (which realy isn't that much, but they'll still charge you for it).
some friends were getting their namees cut for their thesis shows in 6" letters for the gallery and they were paying something like $15 for their name and $15 for theri title if they got that

... if you're doing it yourself, the roll vinyl is relatively enexpensive and most areas have at least 1 shop or hardware store that will carry it in various durabilities - like indoor, then outdoor 3 year, 5 year, 10 year, etc
you can just print your artwork and spray mount it to the backing and cut it with an xacto... make sure to get premask so putting it up on whatever isn't a hassle

at one of the places i interned at, they charged a bit much for car vinyl stuff but would throw in a free web site. Not the brightest stars in the sky, i'm telling you.

hmm. i don't like the expensive part of it. i'm looking to do wall covering on the cheap but effective.

i think most places are by the square foot? but i'm not positive... if you get it done somewhere ask if you can just have the premask and weed it yourself... that might knock some off of it
