Fotnlab is probably the most advanced and most used among professional type designers currently.

Fontlab is great

also check out Type Tool, not as advanced as Fontlab but a good app to start with + it's much cheaper.

Related ques: Its weird in fontlab I when I exported the type I was working on to OpenType, the previews and suitcase had my ascenders and descenders overlapping. However when I use the type in illustrator or other, ts not an issue, I thought maybe there was some way to adjust the default space between lines but I havent found it.

Never trust Suitcase.

what do you have against Suitcase?
do you have to run FontAgent all the time like you do with Suitcase?
- Typographica0
No, FAP will auto-activate while the app is not open. Suitcase is less stable overall. Been FAP user for over 3 years. Give it a go, you'll thank me.

yeah ok, but what about on windows systems?
- Typographica0
Sorry, no idea there.

i f*&#@ing hate Suitcase. We have to work a lot with math pi and symbol fonts, and boy oh boy suitcase does not get along with those.
