hi kids...
doing an ad in dwell magazine this week, and realizing they have some pretty strict guidlines for my naive print self. wondering if anyone can tell me the difference between pdf and pdf/x-1 and how to create the latter. much thanks print people..

it's all Latin to me

make a postscript file from your work, then distill it with Distiller
PDF/X-1 is one og the settings in Distiller unless I'm very much mistaken.

mx
and a postscript file would be an .ai .eps or .pdf right? then i can export one of those files from distiller as an x-1 joey? thanks for the clarity...

linearch,
nope, a postScript file is a .ps file.
You create it by printing and then saving to file (postScript not PDF)are you on Mac or PC?
- Soler0
no, to create a postscript file import the ad into Quark or ID, andthrough the Print Dialog box select "save as file".
Instead of it actually printing it creates a potscript file that you can run in Distiller to create a pdf.
If you don't have Quark or ID, then a Illy eps may work

mac.

sorry Soler,
but
NO!!!
Your file doesn't HAVE to go into ID or Quark.
Also never distill an EPS - bad practise.

I was just telling him it was possible to distill an eps if he didn't have pg layout software, I'm aware that it ain't good as a regular thang.
And no it doesn't HAVE to, but it is the easiest way if you have the tools

right so on the Mac you want to look in the print dialogue options..
I know, in the case of Freehand, that the "save as PS file" option is hidden under "FH settings" or similar...
should be relatively similar for all programs capable of seperation.

yeah true Soler, sorry if my reaction was a little harsh...
I have to explain to people all day why they should use the "export as PDF" functions but rather distill with distiller so I tends to be vehemently behind "best practices"
