I've lived in Seattle for eight years without a car and have gotten along just fine.

Sacramento.
DT is very walkable. Small, communal type of vibe. Good bands, dive bars, laid back.
compared a lot to portland and austin... so i guess it may feel like home.
1 hour to SF & the bay. 1 hour to Lake Tahoe and the Sierras.
whatever.

I'm partial to San Francisco. If you don't feel like walking, the public transportation covers lots of ground as well.

depends on where you want to live in boston. the surrounding neighborhoods have pretty decent prices for living. inside the city in places such as back bay, the fenway, etc prices can get a little higher. it all depends on what you are looking for.
in terms of public transportation, the city is home to the first subway, so i guess boston has always been pretty accessible. the busses cover a lot of ground outside the city and you can pretty much get anywhere you want via the trains. also, boston has some of the lowest public transportation fares of all the cities in america. that said, the transportation shuts down at 1 so if you want to stay at a bar until 2 and get home, you're shit out luck.
but, to answer your question directly, boston is a very walkable city.

Baltimore is pretty walkable i skate all over downtown and its not bad at all, i wouldnt recomend living here though. it sucks theirs like 2 perfect days a year, winters are cold without much snow and the skiing sucks. its 3 hours from an ocean so no surfing alot.

Boston eh? *hands you cookie*
Admittedly, i've never been to the northeast before (only as far as Virginia)..but i've always wanted to . Is it pretty expensive as far as renting a room somewhere within the walking distance areas? Also what is their public transit like (busses or train)?
Thanks for responding..you guys may end up helping me decide something! ;)

Boston!
Of course. It's like the cheaper, smaller, more manageable, accessible New York. Also staunchly democratic, quite liberal, what with the gay marriage and stem cell stuff and all, and tons of arts going down. And we got beaches and mountains in close proximity. And all the pretty fall color business etc etc
...and New York's only 4 hours away, 1 by plane.

Hey guys n girls, what cities in the US would you say are pretty easy to live downtown and be able to walk to all the things you would need to live/work? Or if the public transit is good, as an OK alternate option..
Thanks in advance!! =)
ps, extra cookie for ya if the city you recommend is a bit more liberal or artsy..
