Anyone know if there is a difference between the academic version and the regular version? I have a friend that's a teacher and said they would hook me up,...just wondering if I could miss out on anything by going that route.

no difference-- only the price.
Technically, you're not supposed to use a version licenced for educational use for commercial work, but try telling that to design grads.
