I'm writting a contract that includes a retainer fee.
The retainer fee covers my time per month should my services NOT be rendered.
The retainer fee is in addition to the the overall project cost, which will be charged hourly.
Anyone have any experience writting a contract that uses a retainer fee? Or am I out of my mind?

how much time time does it take NOT to be needed?

Well, its difficult for me to work on other projects if I am expected to work on this project fulltime...Its a contract with the federal government. They tend to hang on things for a while. If they delay and I am not able to work on other projects, I still want to get paid.

gotcha, as a taxpayer I say no retainer fee clause, IMHO

the money's going to be spent anyway, so i say include it. i've done it with regular clients before and i don't see how the gov't should be any different.
