What special steps do I need to take to prep a Colour psd I want to print in black in white, but using Pantone black.
I was reading into the channels and stuff for doing duotone images but it seems a little different and I am not sure if the process is the same for white and black image.
Can anyone shed some light on this?

make your ps doc a monotone using the pms color
- BonSeff0
or just simply work in greyscale and specify the pms to the printer

That was easy enough, thanks so much, esp for such a quick response! :)

Whats the best format to take this into illustrator, psd gives me an error, and when I do import it, should the swatch I chose appear in my palette?

.EPS should do fine.
and yes... the swatch will come with it.

I tried this today again to get a piece ready for print, with a pantone colour, and white for monotone image, but if I save as EPS it does not import the swatch. After a bit of reading it seems like I need to do this monotone effect using milti channel mode and then save as EPS or DCS i think it is. Not sure how to do that as I don't work with the channels too often. Can anyone help me out?

just do a monotone as an eps and it should import the swatch

search the PVN archive, there was a similar thread not so long ago for duotone if im correct

dont worry about it man. just save the file as a greyscale tif and tell the printer what pantone you are specifying.
don't over complicate it

I guess thats what ill do, at least I know they can still pen the file in the pre press area. Is this common though?

you can get away with it for one color jobs. no sweat
