for anyone that's bilingual or has learned japanese as a second language, how would you recommend going about it?
i know it will be extremely challenging, but should i find a class? any good tutorial books? tutor?

do not use old school style japanese samurai movies as reference. I am told my wife that she often hears foreigners trying ancient japanese phrases. If anything, load up on manga with subtitles and get friendly with some japanese on msn or something to expand on your vocab. Most important is your pronounciation of their words when written in english characters, they have different announciations for certain letters in certain places. any good japanese phrase book will explain this.

I'm self-teaching as of like 2 weeks ago – a good book is: Japanese for Busy People
There are lots of solid beginner books out there, but definitely work on the hiragana and katakana before you get going.
Check this resource too:

/blpod.htmGreat simple phrases with grammatical and cultural explanations
Good luck!

also after you get the basics, watch alot of japanese tv or movie, i learned most of my japanese from watch tv and movies.
you still start to pick it up. more you hear it and see how its used, mroe you get better at it.
also, i dont knwo where you are but there are language schools for japanes who are learning english. see if they have language exchange program. where you sit with them and talk to them for one hour and teach english and they teach you japanese for one hour.

date a japanese chick. have here teach you the art of japanese lovemaking first.
if she's bad at that she's probably bad at teaching you the language. keep doing this until you find a chick hot in the sack. then have her teach you.

i'm actually just graduating, but took spanish for my language requirement... kind of wish i would have gone for japanese.
i just don't know how to approach it because the character system is unlike anything i've learned before (ie not a romance langauge).
