web image size?

Hello, Sunday afternoon and i am working grrr...
Anyway, I am just finishing off a website for a friend, an illustrator. Was wondering what size is suitable for portfolio images.
For example is 47kb too big?
What are opinions on this...

:) its ok, by the way i visited the site during my heavy downloading session and its speed was still okay for me. i also liked the overall site, its plain, clean and goes right to the point for an illustrator's web site ;)

people have broadband, so why compress at all?
i always put the RAW files straight on the server, about 30-60mb per picture.
people are always in awe of the sheer quality of it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
