so this piece of shit isn't mounting when i plug it in. it instead either displays the charging screen or the main screen where you pick songs.
i've tried restarting both the ipod and the mac, plugging and unplugging, having hold on and off, etc, all with no success.
anyone have this experience and/or know how to fix it?
someone tell me the secret trick to make this thing not a pretty 400 dollar paperweight and let me get my portfolio files off of it.

have you tried holding the menu+middlebutton in for 5 or more sec. until it resets... worked on mine

it's funny how such an unreliable, overpriced p.o.s. device has become such a status symbol and subcultural icon.

i just tried that and it gives me the right screen [the 'do not disconnect' one], but still doesn't mount.

oh shit, there it goes.
thanks man.

np, just can't let you sit around with a 400 dollar paperweight

just like your computer, sometimes it helps just to restart it.

Yeah the iPod has it's problems. you're paying to be trendy. At least it's small, but I didn't mind sacrificing size for the removable battery in my creative zen xtra.

my ipod battery has died and gone to ipod heaven, but when i had problems mounting the sucker i was told to power down the firewire port in the mac, disconnect the power cables for about 15 mins from your mac and then reconnect and start up and plug in your pod. if that don't work then check out these forums:

the only problem there is with ipods is that the ppl who buy them refuse to read the damn manual
- ribit0
nobody ever reads manuals

good point punch.

ribit...nobody reads manuals thats true
i dont read them most of the times either... but when i have a device and it has problems first thing i do is check the manual for it
and most of the problems people have with ipods are in the manual

fyi:: you can force your iPod into drive mode by holding the > buttons while it's connected.

manual says
'in case your apple ipod fucks up, panic, throw it against a wall, then post on nt'
