I am heading to portland tomorrow for the weekend. What should i take in? hip galleries? stores? strange museums?

23rd Ave, Marrakesh restaurant on 21st, i think and Powell's book store.

yup you've got to see powell's and (bearing in mind i haven't been there for a long, long time) the pearl district has some good art galleries and cafes. around pnca there's usually some cool stuff to see and do. belmont ave in se and woodstock ave are both good. the delta cafe, the paradox cafe, any of the mcmenamin's cinema pubs are a good cheap date, nw trendy-third (23rd) has all the hipster gear, and just a few streets over is restaurant row (21st) where all teh foodies congregate. rocco's pizza is an old fave and a good night out is usually to be found at fellini's/satyricon. the lutz tavern is an absolute must.

paraselene pretty much summed it up except for SE Hawthorn St. And if you have a chance drive to the Gorge or Mt Hood it's going to be in the 90's!

there a nice zen garden in portland, although it's small
and powells books
and burnside if you're into skating
and lots of smack

Burnside skatepark is sick if you're into that sort of thing (just under the Hawthorn side of Burnside bridge)
I concur with fullerc, you should check out MT Hood for sure.

omg yes! go to the gorge and take a tour of full sail brewery. if you can't make it out of town you should check out bridgeport brewery in its wicked old piano factory. there's probably loads of new microbreweries as well since i've been back. if you find yourself awake at around 7 am and fancy a margarita, head down to the marathon taverna and drink with the bike messengers. clinton st. (where i used to live) in se is phenomenal. cheese fries at dot's or a sunny day drink at la cruda are well worth it and if you feel like doing something grown-up, visit the rose garden where they have all sorts of mad hybrids. isn't there a new japanese tea garden downtown somewheres these days? that's probably pretty cool. see the home of the slow food movement in the states at city market or bum around at saturday market with the hippies. all good stuff! and sushi is invariably good throughout the city.

i felt i could have skipped the zen garden (the one by the rose gardens) and had a complete vacation. Maybe it's because it didn't seem as serene as i was hoping. Other people there were rather rambunctious.

I was bummed about the size of the zen garden, the map made it look huge(damn designers) but we walked though in like 15 minutes, still liked it more than the rose garden though.
There some good thai food down from powells around the corner

one fine summer day a few years back I rode mt hood in the morniing(hiked to the pipes) and drove to the river and windsurfed all afternoon, good times!

I think La Cruda went out of buisness, they had great drinks but horrible burritos.
Dots is still there and a must on any PDX tour.
Do a search on the Columbia River Gorge/Hood River. Great town lots of outdoorsy stuff.
