I have been wondering where print designers get there paper from. Do you order it straight from the companies that make it or choose from what your printer has available? I heard someone here a few weeks ago mention their 'paper rep'. Is a paper rep someone from the print shop?
Any tips on what paper companies send out the best sample packs would be great too.

If our printer doesn't have the paper we want, they order it. We usually try to give them a couple of days notice (at the very least) so that the paper is there when we drop the job off.
You can get good samples from a printer sales rep and/or contact paper companies and ask for sample packs (if you have the time).

the fun thing about getting samples from the actual paper company is you sometimes get presents (posters, books, etc).

You should find a local distributor, they will give you books of all the lines they carry, and can get you endless samples.
Most larger cities in the US have a MAC Paper.

Hmmm.. We have a paper consultants from different distributors. They give us boxes of samples that we get updated about each year or so.
buntin reid, unisource, etc.

also, the printer we use the most will regularly send a rep over to go through our paper samples and make sure we have the most current books. They also remember you whenever they put on paper luncheons (paper companies visiting to promote a new line, usually at a restaurant, for free. You get nicer presents at those -tshirts, bottles of wine, etc). it's like going to Disneyland for part of the day...

Yeah and some spend like 5 1- 10 bucks in shipping to get you the samples free of cost.
I remember I emailed a ton of paper companies and had 2 or 3 packages at my door everyday for over a weak.
Domtar has some nice stuff.
