Why would they do that, it would hurt the visibility of the advertisements, and cut down on site traffic, which is I'm sure part of the attraction for companies?

Stands for Really Stupid Sin-dication, right?

you sign up for it and it emails news blurbs to you?
- ********0
doesn't that keep people from seeing ads?

yep...in the case of K10K you just link directly to the new story without the rest of the site loading in...much quicker.

in firefox a little orange icon appear in the bottom right of the browser when you go to a site with a rss feed, click that, then bookmark it to you 'bookmark toolbar folder'
