a friend who is much more knowledgeable on actionscripting told me there is a way to put a line in a flash file, that, incase you had a client who didn't pay a bill, you could make the flash return to blank page.
i have a client now who has been dragging on a small website project i've been doing for them fro OVER a year, whom i feel, may decide not to pay me the rest of the balance they owe me for the site.
does anyone know how that might work?
it sounds simple, would that flash file check a variable somewhere on the web and make it either play or not play....?

I guess you can creat a variable that checks to see the value and depending on the value will play the rest of the file or not. The variable can be hosted on your site via a txt file or xml file.

nice, sounds like that would work. i may keep that trick in my back pocket, as my client keeps breaching our agreement.

on your server have a .txt file with
&payed=0
&screwed=1or
&payed=1
&screwed=0shuld they decide to pay up... be careful though as if you have nothing in writing to say they should have payed in time, and you pull the plug on them and cause harm to their business, you could get in trouble!

Engage, i do have a signed agreement, the project was only suppose to be a 3 month gig and they have gone through 3 writers for the content, and it's been almost 10 months.
but i was also wondering about the legal ramifications if i also put an easter egg in the flash file that says, "pay up bi-otch"
thanks for the code hints, i am very serious about doing this because the client is such a pain.

get them to pay up or you won't do any more work... they cant bail now surely?

}else{
load("tubgirl.jpg");
}

* going to submit this hint to flashkit

Just a note: Flash will not pull in a file (dataLoad) from outside the domain. You will need to do a search for: Security Restrictions for Data Loading work arounds.
I've used php to mirror the outside page or file to get around this. If your going to do this make sure it defaults to play in case this external file is deleted or become unavailable.

if (payed == true){
play();
} else {
getURL("http://www.goatse.com",0...
"
should work..

instead of hosting a variable on your server, just have the flash file check the server time so it works wherever its hosted and if its after a certain date, it blows up. this lets you get a lot more creative like "Merry Christmas! Love, The Designer You Never Paid In Full"

and how hard would it be for the client to hire some other guy and take out those external references ?
Simply never give the actual files before it's paid for and host it on your own server with some php protection that it gets hard to steal.
day work and you can reuse this system.

always get all your clients hosting details.. even better, get thier domain details. then you can stop their email. putting nasty messages on thier website will make them hate you, stopping thier email will make them pay you. maybe
