hello, once again.
ive decided that this week i am going to start cold calling design companies in new york to see if they have any openings and maybe charm them with my wit. however, i have absolutely no idea how to get the ball rolling.
anyone have some advice as to what i should say?
any help would be much appreciated.
love always,

Make a list of the ones you fancy, add a little bit of info on each - type of work, clients etc and work out for each how you would be an asset to their company.
It might save you from talking about what you had for lunch by mistake.

Dude, send a resume+brief portfolio first, THEN call.

Enter response:
find the studio you really want to work for... set up outside about 40 mins or so before people start arriving for work.
Have hot egg n cheese sandwiches, coffee and something for you pussies who don't eat meat to munch on.
Big smile!

There is nothing wrong with that. I've done it many times and actualy have had interviews and almost landed a major job.

Agree wit skt.
I would also find out the name of who to talk to i.e CD, AD depending on what position your going for.
Before cold calling I generally send out a little teaser as a small intro. If they remember it your in.
Good luck.
Remember there is a fine line between pestering and enquiring.

seriously though give them a call, we get people calling sometimes and we give them lots of help trying to find out who might be looking for employees and sometimes get them in if we need help ourselves, be confident and happy.

Matt,
I agree with Dancer. Sending a teaser / gimmick is a great door opener (especially if it's humourous or a bit leftfield). I'm on the receiving end of applicants resumes, some really blow hard beacuase they're ordinary and boring, anything out of the norm stands head and shoulders above the crowd.
I was sent a clockwork mouse recently with just a tag attached with the designers url on it. It worked for me!

I did that when I first started out. All you have to do is ask if there are any open within the company and ask them if they would like to see you portfolio. Most people will give you the time of day.
The hardiest part you are going to find is getting past the secretary.
Good Luck Mate.
