Genius.
One of America's true musical treasures -- yet we're too busy listening to Beyonce and Jessica Simpson to notice.

(Jul 6 05, 05:48)...was quite funny cause I didn't know he was gay - saw him for 1st time live and at the end of the show he stripped off (along with the rest of the singers) into a big fairy outfit with wings and these pink y fronts - was soooo funny!

I only have Want One, but it's a great album, and I keep meaning to check out more.
Good stuff.

Didn't know he was gay?
Did you miss the songs "Gay Messiah" and "Art Teacher?"
When you're forced to sing show tunes as a child (his parents we're big names in the theatre), you probably don't have much chance to turn out hetero. He might pay in the end (sorry) for choosing to be so "out," but his music is incredible.

Best singer / songwriter I've heard. I love his stuff and the most amazing thing about it is he makes it look so easy - all his songs sound like they were written in a day but still sound really great - like Little Sister (if you know what I mean).

He's coming to Chicago next month! Can't wait to see him in person. His voice & lyrics are so incredible. Definitely one of the most talented songwriters ever born.

impeccable vibrato

He's like best friends with Melissa Auf der Maur. Yeah, his stuff his pretty good. I mainly love his lazy voice though. And Martha Wainwright (his sister) is almost as great.

links to his music anyone?

First time I heard him, I was in the passenger seat of a car filled with cigarette smoke. I was so tempted to jump out the window to get some damn oxygen when "Cigarettes & Chocolate Milk" came on the radio, which made light out of the situation. I swear Rufus saved me that day.

I think he's good. He draws on a lot of interesting influences of self-indulgence. (French opera, Elton John, Radiohead)

I heard he has a huge ego.
- Mimio0
Yeah, I'm sure he thinks it's a huge injustice that he's not selling 35 million albums.

He keepss on saying he looks like James Dean.

amazing, truly genius in a sort of Randy Newman way.
And if he has a big ego, cool, he deserves it.
There are some great live recorded sessions at KCRW—a whole bunch, including his brother and sister as well—and his mom on his:

I love him, but nobody needs a big ego.
