Just started new job today at a big independant UK style mag!
They got me a PC with XP and I've made a passworded account for myself and a spare account for any staff who might want to use the PC.
I'd like to get a piece of software that locks-out downloads and certain programs on a specific XP account so they cannae break my lovely new computer.
Any suggestions would be so much appreciated!

As administrator of the PC you should be able to do it via the settings.
Open the Run command and type gpedit.msc
From here you should be able to lock out anything you don;t want them meddling with.

Although I have no idea how to work that!

I found Trend to be one of thes best providers for security and Norton Antivirus the worst. I you want to control how other people use the machine can't you get your network administrator to do that? or prevent sharing of certain folders by right clicking the folders and setting the perimissions??

a guest account shouldn't be able to install software anyway, and anything that you install as administrator shouldn't be available to guest users.
as for locking down downloads, i'm not sure that's possible. if a user opens a browser and types in a web address, in effect they have just downloaded anyway (images, scripts, css, html etc into the cache). and i can't see how you could distinguish between that kind of internet transfer and one where someone has actually clicked 'download'! you would have to prevent guests from opening a browser.

it is possible to prevent downloads of certain file extensions like .pif and .exe. Our administrators do it thorugh the server software not sure exactly how tho!

Rent-a-Chav
Great business idea, problem is a proper chav would surely nick the equipment he's meant to be guarding. Thus rendering his service ineffective.Network Admin
We have no network admin here. I'm the most technically able person in the office it seems. But thank you for all the suggestions. I'm going to speak to a Network Admin over at another company I've worked for and find out how he sets the systems up there.
