I'm looking for a program to design some video around music. I'm well schooled in AFX, Premiere, FCP, etc. But I'd like something more hands on and less programmed.
Idealy I'd like to be able to asign MIDI channels or info to a particular clip to have it triggered, or have video respond to sound. Be able to control filters with CC's. Or if there is something for video like there is for audio where you can mess with it on the granual level (granual synthesis).
Any ideas? Thanks.

back in 'the day' it was always a smooth low-tone 'yeah' that flowed fluently across the tounges of the on-lookers.

MIDI is extremely powerful. PonyBoy speaks BS.
All depends what you want to do with it. It's all triggering. Live sets? Recording?
PC = Vegas Video from Sony

Doesn't Apple Motion 2 have the ability to be control by MIDI equipment? I'm sure it does?

Here you go..
Motion 2
MIDI Behaviour
Move beyond a single hand on a mouse or pen to enjoy the flexibility of multiple fingers on a MIDI control surface. With Motion 2, you can assign any number of filters or transform parameters to a MIDI knob, fader or pad with “Learn” mode. Because you get real-time, dynamic response to simultaneous inputs, you can even “play” Motion like a musical instrument for spontaneous live performances.

Or you could use something like
Motion Dive Tokyo
which is a piece of VJ software

I'd suggest trying Arkaos VJ. It can edit things with effects (some of the settings are extremely cheesy, but there are combinations of settings that work well.
it does Quicktime export, MIDI and qwerty, can use still images or filmclips. A demo is available:

MIDI was originally used for lighting effects and such at concerts.

Motion Dive does not support MIDI.
Motion 2 is what you are looking for.
For real time performance, try Modul8
