Looking for something free, I know it's out there. Right now I have zone alarm, lab whatever it's called, and mcafee for the antivirus and firewall thingy.

I would recommend:
Spybot Search + Destroy
Adaware
zonealarmpretty sure these are all free still
also: don;t use internet explorer - get firefox or something
I use norton internet security as well.

how is it that I have no spyware?
do you visit alot of porn web sites?
do you click on banner ads that say 'get rid of spyware'?
- ArtDirector0
Yeah, I was looking at porn last night and all of a sudden I got a new toolbar on my Internet Explorer.

If you have no spyware i garantee your infected.
I booted up a new pc with nothing on it and with and hour of surfing normal sites i was infected.
Microsoft (god forbid) have a good spyware app. Also be sure and install service pack 2. It has a great firewall in it.
But i'd invest in Norton or MacaFee

I partially agree with toe knee. No news may or may not be good news, but I can personally vouche for having a clean PC infected with a virus literally minutes after reformatting. I didn't even have a chance to set up the firewall or run system update!

All of those are free, (except norton) and so far, it's been the best free defense system I've seen for a PC yet. I've personally fixed over a dozen boxes now with those very tools.
Also, be sure to immunize your box while disconnected from the internet(s). Some of those buggers go back out and fix themselves. It also can take as little as 20 minutes to infect a computer that's unprotected and connected to the internet(s).

As an alternative to Norton check out AVG from Grisoft. It's really quite good *and* free. Been around for years.

"If you have no spyware i garantee your infected."
is this a yogi berra quote?

I must be doing something wrong, been using the same XP Pro install for over a year now with no spyware. I use firefox, zone alarm and MS AntiSpyware...

Use zonealarm and restrict internet access to and from suspicious sources.
Use firefox (fewer spyware company makes toolbars for FF)
Use AVG/Avast/Grisoft Antivirus
Use Lavasoft Adaware to clean out your system every now and then.
