Business Sold - website?

I did a website for a company a while back. Everything went quite well, and I got paid well for the job. It turns out the business was sold, but it wasn't your straightforward business sale. It was pretty much just the bricks and mortar. None of the IP changed hands due to a protracted legal fight between the seller and the buyer...too complicated to explain.
Anyway, the new owner has somehow taken control of the website - not sure how, but it shouldn't have been part of the business sale.
Should I send them a bill to use the site as it was never licensed to them?

i don't know the legality of this at all, but what was in the contract?
if it was just one-time payment for making the site (and you don't have to maintain or if they don't have to pay you annual licensing fee), and if you have received all the payment, then i say they don't have to pay you.
if this was something you contracted to maintain, then you may need to talk to them for adjustments of the contract, which they may not even sign at all. the same goes with annual licensing fee.

it's tricky. if the contract and agreement clearly states, then you should ask for the payment. it's all about having a solid contract.

It was just a one off development contract. But the entity that is using the site is not the entity I entered into the contract with.
And the fact that none of the actual 'business' changed hands then I have a feeling they are breaching copyright.

just take it out of your portfolio, unless you think they are going to pay up. If they dealt with a legal fight over the actual business sale, this doesnt look to good for you, without a fight.
