Which type of work do you prefer? Do you find leaving a full time job for a contract or contract to hire position risky?
- jpea0
risky, possibly.
enjoyable, greatly
:-)just do what you feel led to do. freelancing's fine for some, not for others.

Contractor for sure!

I have an opportunity to interview for a contract job with great pay (26K more than I get now) and sounds interesting. The contract ends in December but can be renewed. The bad thing is that it is an hour away whithout traffic from the house I just bought on the whole other side of the area. I am at my limit with my current drive already.

exactly seed, I did virtually the same, an extra 20K per year. So worth it to me.

i'd rather read the finacial times to a contract anyday.

You had the same driving distance? Did you have to move? I think I would have to get a studio apt out there to deal with it. I am supposed to tell the dude if I am interested in like 1 minute too. I am pretty confident that if I interviewed I could get it.

contract. make sure to talk to your accountant about tax deductions and all that good stuff. i've been contracting/freelancing for 3-4yrs now. as a contractor, you can get away with many things.

Even though the pay is insanely good I may just pass until I move out to that area later. It seems like that is where all the jobs are moving to anyway.

Who knows, I wonder if you could write off travel and boarding expenses as a contractor.
- seed0
I don't think I would be considered an independent contractor. More like an employee of the contracting company.

if you're paying your own taxes, you're an IC. thus, you get to write off anything that pay in expenses to do your job. travel, studio space, biz lunches, etc...

I agreed to get submitted for the interview. It's a lot of added stress I don't really need right now but could be worth it.

Out of curiosity, how much is housing in St. Louis?
- seed0
It really depends on the exact area. I live on the IL side and got a 1700 sq ft 3br in a nice town for 135K. The town I work in that would probably be 200K. In the fancier areas the average home is around 500K. In the city it's hard to say as there are many different housing styles, most neighborhoods are bad and a lot of the buildings are dilapidated.

Here is a dream home. Looks like it should be torn down.

This place is kind of interesting looking:
