balmy(in the mission, hip bars, food and shops) actually looks really cool plus they have bikes you can ride, des arts has local and national artist painted rooms and a central downtown location.

I'm leaning toward Balmy--sounds very appealing and easygoing
is that a far bike ride from downtown?

10-15 minutes, everything is pretty close except the beach, 40-50 minutes by bike. The mision has great weather, usually sunny when the rest of the city is foggy during the summer.

a friend wroite me this about Balmy in the Mission District: "Very inner city. Very Hispanic. But an interesting spot. You won't find a franchise for miles, and you can get by all the crack, smack and pupusas you want!"

Rand, there's a KFC and a McDonalds within a few blocks of Balmy, but otherwise a fair description of that area of the Mission. Good also for bars and book stores.

i think the place you're talking about is on guererro @ 16th...which is getting increasingly yuppified and not so edgy. the truly edgy part of mission is around 24th/mission.
anyway...this place isn't cheap and the location is downtown, but you get to book a room painted by local sf artist.
one of my friends is actually painting one of the rooms this week and i've been hanging out there occassionally. it's pretty cool stuff
