I enjoyed walking around the gaslamp district, but i don't know how much action you're looking for.

less party - more grown up boring type of fun

the gaslamp district seemed like a place to go for drinks, not party. There's a pool hall there, restaurants, pubs and cute shops that were closed when we got there. Oh, and finding a place to have lunch on a Saturday after noon was nearly impossible unless you wanted fast food. Call before you go somewhere or you'll wander like my best friend and I did and settle for a place that you'll regret.

The Prado in balboa park – museums, a couple of nice restaurants, an outdoor theater, street performers, tons of people walking around
a nice mellow time for sure with your gf
it's uptown next to Hillcrest, which has a ton of great restaurants

Gaslamp is pretty chill, you can find lots of things there. On 5th theres a pretty big hookah lounge with a chill atmosphere. Seaport village is right by there, check out the bay and nice little shops.
