To create a "message board" similar to this one
Which would be easier and less time consuming?1. code it form nothing?
2. install a phpbb and tweak it?both would be a bit time consuming and hectic.
guys?

is this a stupid question?
i really would like an answer.

not stupid at all. good question.
to save time use the phpBB and mess with it yourself
- cosmo0
exactly wat van_rijn said. Writing from scratch would take a long time.
- JAYELECTRONICA0
but tweaking a phpbb to somewhat parallel this would take just as much time dont you think?
- cosmo0
tweaking phpBB would take time too, cause would have to know the different files associated with each other, etc. Which is very tedious work.

why reinvent the wheel? find and existing one that you like and tweak. surely there are heaps to choose from? i understand the anti-template thought regarding usual products and websites but you're making a portal for the exchange of info not a company / product experience.
i'm kent brockman and there's my 2cents...
- JAYELECTRONICA0
the best 2cent of the day...
only problem is
that there are none that exist that are even remotely close to what i want.
this PVN is the closest ive seen and its not a downloadable template available for tweaking.
any suggestions?

but not really like pvn.
- JAYELECTRONICA0

but thanks just the same.

i say write you own. all of the off-the-shelf ones have too much crap in them.
all phpBB sites look similar. you can tell that they are usign it.
I built a php blog because MT was too complex for my needs. It is worthwhile to do it solo.

Make you're own. I tried fiddling with phpbb once and it's huge. You'll spend weeks lost in there.
In all honesty - this set up isn't very hard. I made one for my site: http://www.determinedmoth.org/
However - I still run phpbb for the locals.*hangs head in shame
