what's the magic resolution to make websites?
standard resolution used to be 800 x 600 but now it seems it's more like 1024 x 768.
what does that mean for me designing a website? when taking into account the address bar and status bar and bookmarks and scroll bar and all that jazz, what are the dimensions to work with?
thanks!

designing for 1024 x 768 here more now too
anywhere within around 880 - 960 width
if you wanna constrain the height, may be 600?

depends upon who you're designing the site for. a lot of older people still run their monitors at 800x600

it all depends on your audience no? there's gotta be some stats out there...
- anzelina0
yeah we figure that the audience is going to be a bit more advanced.
definitely not 800 x 600.
but want to cover all the bases and do the next step up.

browser stats - http://www.w3schools.com/browser…
Don't invest to much into stats until you know your market.

12568 x 9852
screw em if they can't fit it in their browser.
i like to put a lot of useful information on the home page.

Haha, I love Gob's magic tricks too, James!

My parents need their computer resolutions to be 800x600 so they can see the info without squinting. Older people tend to have their resolutions lower.
I use 1024x768 on my laptop.
It definitely depends on the kind of audience you want (knowing the age group would help too). If you have a lot of (flashy mashy) work, you should probably have a higher resolution.
You could also have an option on the front page for both types of users.

okay, so we're set with the 1024 x 768.
that's not really my question though.
my question is : if the resolution is set to 1024 x 768, what is the ACTUAL dimension of the browser window? [subtracting things like the address and status and scroll bars from the 1024...]
anyone?

i like safari, i can take off all the bottom stuff, i mean, ahem, CHROME, and it's beautiful.
the only thing is i'm so used to having the status bar on, i check it all the time to see where i'll go when i click something.
I'M ADDICTED TO SAFARI'S STATUS BAR!
