--------------------------------...
yankee = jan kees = jan kaas = john cheese = nickname for dutch settlers in ny area
red sox = the red socks they all used to wear, which are still worn to this day by some of the more superstitious players
royals = an expansion team from the 60s after the athletics moved to oakland, named after an old negro league team in the area, the monarchs
braves = used to be the boston braves, one of the two teams that kicked around here. massachusetts has quite the indian history, including an early war (king phillips war) that almost drove the white settlers out of massachusetts altogether.
dodgers = used to be brooklyn dodgers, short for 'trolley dodgers', 'cause apparently it was pretty damn difficult to navigate the brooklyn trolleys to get to the ballpark.
tigers = named after the Detroit Light Guard, a military unit based in Detroit that fought in the civil war and the spanish american war. their nickname was 'the tigers', the ballclub used their trademark and the rest wrote itself.
orioles = named after the baltimore oriole...a very pretty very loud bird...the name was actually shuffled between a bunch of teams. the current orioles actually started off as the milwaukee brewers.

and yeah the money is sick, but doesn't guarantee the wins.
look at the yanks :Pread 'moneyball'...how the oakland a's made themselves a championship club by picking their players carefully with a small budget.

money doesn't buy wins and as soon as MLB institutes smart playing rules, the Yankees will have no better team than the Royals for example

Nahh man most of those dudes were born in other countries, but the system is so focused and precise today these guys get citizenship even in the minor leagues if their worth half their *sses.
Puerto Rico is US territory and the Dominican Republic might as well be for all intensive purposes. Mexican players come in and stay anyway or are found out. Besides the 10 or so Japanese players, there is little else. A few Middle Americans and South Americans.
