There seems to be a lot of people on nt claiming they're Creative Directors, but have a weak portfolio.

I'm just looking to see what's out there and try and make some contacts to meet up with when I arrive on Aus shores.
My experience for the last 5 years has been at a senior role, focusing on brand and bussiness development, product launches/relaunches, concept planning and team management.
As a creative I'm a strong visual communicator and highly experienced with type and print communications. I'm no programmer but I have a strong planning experience of web stratergy within the youth sector, and hands on experience in medium sized data driven web projects.
I am a natural problem solver this approach has lead to success as a creative and a manager.
My passion is the role of design and communication in product and brand development - from typeface selection to brand stratergy.
If you have any useful Melbourne contacts or advice I'd love hear from you - tonyatgm02.co.uk

That's fair enough, I around 10 years of experience - left University with a 1st class honours degree and have worked for some of the top names in publishing. My work has been a nominated finalist on 5 occasions at one of the leading publishing awards in the UK. So I don't use the term losely, and as I said I have genuine senior management experience over the last 5 years.
I think the problem is, it's become a term that every freelancing graduate thinks is cool for their CV - one that will stand out in the CV pile.
No offense taken ; )

"left University with a 1st class honours degree"
hahahaha, as if that really matters!!

If your wanting to make contacts, then why not email them directly?

Well I'm in the UK at the moment and most of these things go by word of mouth and networking always good to let people know in advance that you are coming.
It's not always so easy to cold call and I know from my experience people get a lot of it - with the time difference I just thought I'd use the friendly global network that is Newstoday, though it seems I've ruffled some feathers - save.
I'm not sure that any of it matters really. I'm sorry you are so offended by the job titles people have used and you have been let down by some false self promotion.
As I said I know what I can do, have done and will subsequently be doing ; )
What's you story then as I seem to be under you microscope??

1. Research for companies in Melbourne
3. Call the companies and get the Creative Directors email address
4. Email the Creative Drector
5. Tell him/her your situation
6. Keep them updated
7. Move to Melbourne
8. Call them and arrange a meeting

I'm sorry, its your whole approach. The way you advertise yourself makes you sound like a student, especially when you stated you got a 1st class honours. That no longer matters, what does is your work. Try to keep it more casual, and if you really are a Creative Director then approach it logically like you would on a job.

thanks for that...
Don't know what the deal is there, I guess some people feel grand by staing the obvious.
I felt that Newstoday was a good place to expand my research - whci I have been doing for the past 12 months, now that my residency visa has been processed and I have a an actual date for arriving in Aus I just thought I'd open and thread and see if anything turned up. Not looking for some easy route in just using the design network.
Thanks for your reply. It' all good I'm thick skinned ; ) - comes with the territory of being a creative...
Save chill out

Sorry mate - maybe it's the whole, world of design nepeism and all that - I've do date only ever formally applied for one job in ten years - I was approached for my last 2 jobs directly from referals. And it's only the big move to Aus that means that I am actually looking. No offence taken it's all banter really - I don't think I put the degree bit in my original post it was more there to make a fecicious point but that is probably best avoided online, maybe the subtlety gets lost!!
Seriously in short I have worked mainly in a publishing environement except for freelance and personal projects - From EMAP Where I worked on computer games titles I was offered hired to Art Direct MacUser magazine at Dennis publishing. From there I was refered for the position of Company Art Director to help develop Action Sports Media publishing where I have held the position of Creative Director for the last three years.
A small independent publishing company with three leading titles across Europe, I have be involved heavily the development of ASM at a business level as well as heading up the Creative process.
That'e me really. I'm looking to either pick up senior level publishing work - join an aspirational young agency or publisher looking for some depth and experience at both creative and business level. I also have a couple of projects that I may be looking into launching in the next year or 2.
I guess it might have seemed like this ws my first approach but - I've been doing a lot of research, it was more of a lazy friendly punt really - to see what came back.

thanks for the contact - your in my address book.
