looking for a book on basics and fundamentals of drawing. something practical that can help me get started on this ancient artform.

Set up a still life and draw it. Start there. Measure proportions with your drawing utensil.

i looked at some of the reviews and comments on amazon regarding this look and some people say that it has a lot of pyscho babble about finding the inner artist and crap like that. is that true?
and any other recommendation? preferably where i dont have to search for my inner artist and just learn things.
