i got that letter from apple offering to exchange battery / ipod or give a $50 apple store credit.
since you're the owner now, i'll fill it out if you give me the serial number, and then pass the bucks on to you.
i think it would be complicated to do the battery / ipod replacement unless you want to mail me the ipod.
best idea is get the $50 store credit and i can easily mail that to you.

obviously I cannot provide a receipt for it, so how does that work?

yo buddy, ask the person who gave you the gift to give you a copy of the receipt?
there is no other provision, really.
they can cross out the price, but it's probably not a big secret.
