Flash mask question

I want to reveal one photo that is underneath another with an animated shape mask, like, a circle being filled up vertically, for example. So, I create a movieclip with a circle being filled up by a square (the circle is masking the square in the MC. Then I want to use that MC to mask one of the photos in the main timeline.
The problem is that Flash shows the square moving up through the circle. How do I solve this masking dilemma?

compose your masking in an mc. so mask your sqaure with a circle inside the mc and keyframe it.
place this maskMc on stage above the mc to be masked and use setMask() to mask it.
basically make sure everything is mc based when using the setMask func.
