I installed tiger over kitty or whatever the last OS was... and now my DVD player does not work. I put in a DVD and it launches the DVD player... but does not recognize the actual disk nor show it on the desktop. Anyone have this happen to them? I know I should prolly do a fresh install but damn baby... I have too much stuff on my HD to backup.

If you chose 'Upgrade', you could try an 'Archive and Install' instead...it keeps all your data and settings (tick the box), but installs a fresh System folder.
not neccessarily the cause of the problem though...

oh.. and backup. Disks die.

Did you try different DVDs?

the "don't play x-rated videos" check box is checked by default when installing the new OS.
you'll need to click that off.

Maybe your DVD player is jacked. Try reinstalling. Do an Archive and Install.

I just did a clean install of Tiger OSX and now my DVD player (got a G4 with the dual disc drive; super-mega drive or whatever it is) is wacked also. When I put a disc in, it spins, but never shows on the desktop. And when I say it spins, it's like at 4000RPMs. Then when I eject, it doesn't slow down the spin and the drawer pops out and sometimes it almost launches the disc as it is still going 4000 RPMs.

Is 'CLEAN INSTALL' any better than Archive and Install? And why would you do that before trying the Archive/Install first?

(May 31 05, 10:11)Tiger is more stable than Panther. If you are going to wait for a bugless OS then you'll be waiting forever. Just upgrade already. If a whole interactive company works on Tiger then so can you.

(May 31 05, 10:18)Archive & Install is a clean install. It installs a new clean version of the OS but it just keeps all your user account folder.
- ribit0
No there's 3 options in the Installer....
- Upgrade
- Archive/Install
- Erase Disk/InstallYou really should work your way through them... just sounds like some people jump right to the format install when they dont really have to...
- Bureau0
ribit, you responding to me?
- ribit0
whoever... :)
mainly the one shouting 'CLEAN INSTALL BITCH!!'
