is there an easy way to draw a squiggly line in AI without having to piece together a bunch of half circles?

use the squiggle tool, it's next to the wiggle wand.

but really, if you need them to be exact... to appear as cresents attached like you mentioned, why not do it that way, sounds simple enough. If your looking for an alternative I would say use the bezier tool, turn grid and snapping on, and do it that way.
Or use the pencil tool and draw freeform squiggles.
But it cant' get much easier than this.

if make an S pattern correctly and turn that into a graphic style (or was it a brush), so you can then apply it to paths.
that might work, i havent tried it yet.
